Are the days of brick and mortar churches numbered?
Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. Acts 3:6
What do you think? Are the days of brick and mortar churches numbered? My response is yes. There is evidence that the ministry model built with brick and mortar has been crumbling for more than thirty years. I wonder if we might re-contextualize the verse above. The Apostle Peter’s response to a cry for help might read something like:
Then Peter said,
Bricks and mortar have I none;
but such as I have I give you:
In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk.
If the church offers little more than bricks and mortar, what is that secret sauce Peter is referred to as, such as I have I give you?
Maybe your local church delivers a ministry of value outside the walls of the church. Awesome. Keep doing that, and improve it! You should know that your experience is not the prevailing experience of most churches, especially in the northeast of the United States.
What gifts do you have, or have access to, that can help people in the community to rise up and walk?
What is your church’s secret sauce (that isn’t a secret)?
